Human Rights Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo Granted Bail, Cash Bond of 15 Million

Lady Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga in the session sitting at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has released Nicholas Opiyo on a cash bail of UGx 15million.

The judge ruled that while the State had labelled the charges as serious, they remained simply as allegations until proven otherwise.

The lawyer is accused of receiving up to Shs 1.2bn through his NGO Chapter 4 Uganda, which money the state described as “proceeds of crime.”

Opiyo has been on remand at Kitalya Prison since December 24th when he was charged with Money Laundering and failure to file returns with authorities.

The bail hearing at the Buganda Road Court was attended by among other representatives from the Diplomatic Corps as well as members of the legal fraternity and CSO Leaders.
